A new drinking water supply bowser for Karainagar

Many of you are aware that Karai Welfare Society had purchase a new water bowser to replace the existing bowser. The existing water bowser with a mild steel tank purchased in 2005, had corrosion problems due to local environment, operating conditions and heavy use. During summer months the bowser brings water from Chunnakam 2 or 3 times every day. A 13,500 litre stainless steel tank was purchased in UK and transported to Sri Lanka in June 2010. This tank was fitted to a new Ashok Leyland lorry which was purchased in Colombo.  The total cost of this bowser is approximately £28,000.

It is estimated that Karainagar have about 14,000 residents and slowly growing. At present approximately 40% to 50% of the residents are benefiting from drinking water supply scheme. On average 20,000 litres of drinking water is being distributed to the residents.  The bowser crew supply water to about 165 individuals and/or distribution points. The amounts supplied ranges from 100 to 2000 litres. A nominal charge of 50 cents per litre is charged to cover the operating costs.

The rest of the residents live in small lanes into which the water bowser cannot travel. We are at present considering purchasing a small vehicle which could be used for distribution in small lanes using the money from the sale of old bowser. We have established systems and procedures so that sufficient money could be saved for future replacement of the water bowser without further donations from overseas.

Karai Welfare Society did not have sufficient funds to purchase this new bowser and the committee decided to borrow money from well-wishers. We have to settle these interest free loans soon as possible. On behalf of Executive Committee of Karai Welfare Society, I am appealing to all members and well-wishers to make a generous donation towards this project.

Thank you

V. Nagendran
President
